Journalism Skills (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 1)

The module prepares students for the core journalism skills, techniques and knowledge that lay the foundation for the journalism and creative writing degree and journalism career. It includes news gathering, research, news and feature writing. These skills are applicable to print, broadcast, online, mobile and emergent technologies.

 

Multimodal Journalism (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 2)

This module helps students to apply skills in news gathering, production and distribution in print, broadcast, online, mobile and emergent technologies across multiple platforms individually and collaboratively. It considers how factors such as monetisation, non-linear design, audience interaction and mode of dissemination affect the journalistic editorial and production process.

 

Arts, Lifestyle and Sports Journalism (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 2)

The module explores the role of journalism specialism in the modern media and it is based on teaching the knowledge, skills and techniques needed to be an arts, lifestyle and/or sports reporter. It includes journalism ethics, literary and film reviews, radio and podcasting, visual images in a context of specialism journalism and other specialist journalism areas.

Global Journalism and News Culture (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 3)

This module introduces students to global journalism as a concept, a way of researching the expanding news media landscape, and of practicing journalism. Throughout the module, students explore the ethics and nature of journalism that is being created in, and exported by, different countries and compare the approach of journalists, as well as the quality and style of reporting of global news media outlets.

 

Long Form Journalism (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 3)

The module prepares students for researching and producing long form journalism from conception to consumption. The module includes journalism ethics, systematic approach to long form journalism, developing in-depth research methods and storytelling techniques, along with practical skills in writing, broadcasting, and/or digital journalism. Because of Covid-19, all teaching for this module in 2020/2021 was remote. For 2021/2022 teaching at Middlesex University was hybrid (mix of in-person and remote teaching).

Project Management and Research Skills (MA Media Management)

This module helps students to gain research skills that enable them to embark on a process of knowledge-making, self-discovery and self-motivation. Through hands-on assignments, students gain project management skills beneficial for their future career, such as defining, planning and costing projects, which consequently will inform the development of their final major project proposal.

Digital Marketing for the Creative Industries (MA Media Management)

The module aims to explore digital marketing looking at the challenges and opportunities of the new technologies and concepts, such as social media, search engines, mobile advertising and user generated content.

Major Project (MSc Digital Journalism)

The module prepares students for the dissertation and/or for the work placement. The module focuses on helping students pushing their critical and communicative skills and develop already existing knowledge. This module is remotely taught and it includes pre-recorded lectures on developing research questions, gathering literature review, research methods and ethics. Live seminars are focused on developing the knowledge gained from the pre-recorded lectures and to prepare students for their independent work.

Investigative Techniques (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 2)

This module helps students to develop their capacity to evaluate and appreciate good research practices, as well as develop their understanding of research methods and processes, and how these could be applied for both academic and storytelling
purposes. Students learn how to transfer academic research skills and concepts to practical creative work.

Journalism, Society & Power (BA Journalism and Creative Writing - Year 1)

This module introduces students to key journalism theories, ethics, laws, concepts and critical issues. It aims to develop students' understanding of the news media industry, both history and current, as well as teach them to begin to conceptualise what journalism is, and how the practice is developing alongside technology, and to think critically and reflexively about journalism as a discipline. â€‹â€‹â€‹

I marked essay assignments at the Department of Digital Humanities at King's College London for Data Journalism module and Digital Publishing module and I marked dissertations that used quantitative methods for their data collection.

Digital and Online Journalism Practice (BA Broadcast and Digital Journalism - Year 2)

The module prepares students for the world of digital technologies. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge and experience to apply their skills and understanding of online journalism in practical, real-life scenarios. The module includes lectures and seminars on wider topics of social media, photojournalism, digital journalism ethics and online writing skills.

Journalism Skills (BA Journalism / BA Broadcast and Digital Journalism - Year 1)

This module teaches students the foundations of journalism and its core skills of news and digital content production such as news and long form writing, SEO, journalism best practice. It also aims to introduce students to industry governance, as well as teach them visual storytelling. The module emphasises the practical skills that journalists use on a daily basis, such as researching, interviewing, writing, verifying, digital content production and editing. 

 

Ethics and the Media (BA Journalism / BA Broadcast and Digital Journalism - Year 3)

​This module is an introduction to the field of media ethics and its repercussion in terms of policies and laws. Students will critically analyse and participate on a range of historical and topical debates in the areas of policy and ethics in the field of media and communications, such as ‘freedom of speech’, ‘fake news’, ‘the role of the state’, ‘civil society’ and ‘digital citizenship’.

Data Journalism (BA (Hons) Journalism with Content Creation - Year 3)

This module allows students to maximise the use of IT tools and data to support digital storytelling. They learn the basics of a discipline that is growing in strength and importance. This includes learning where to find data, how to critically analyse it, and how to maximise chances for share-ability and interactivity. At the end of the module, students should have a solid understanding of the opportunities provided by data journalism in the digital age.

Digital Media Lab (BA (Hons) Journalism with Content Creation - Year 1)

The aim of this module is to develop the fundamental building blocks of story skills necessary for a career in journalism. This module seeks to introduce students to digital storytelling techniques and tools, ensuring they are well-versed in contemporary methods of news dissemination.

Researching the Digital (MA Digital Media, Culture and Economy)

This module is designed to prepare students to enter into the process of independent research. Students learn how best to initiate, develop and produce a dissertation, helping them to cultivate the research and organisational skills needed to successfully pursue an extended piece of academic writing. Key questions which this module tries to answer: how can we think with digital objects and visual materials, how might we make imaginative use of digital archives, and what can unethical practices teach us about ethical ones?
